SPACE supports arts and culture in selected North Brooklyn communities and encourages all applicants including individuals of color and those with ties to immigrant and under-represented groups to apply. Our goal is to facilitate the preservation of diversified cultural landscapes and ensure that all voices, including those at risk of being excluded, benefit from the continuing change and development of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods.
Last year we awarded 10 projects, representing a total of 8 of our North Brooklyn communities: Gowanus, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Dumbo, Park Slope, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
The 2016 selected grantee projects include but are not limited to: Irondale, a theater piece that brings NYPD patrol officers and community members together in an effort to learn and understand one another; Black Girls Sew, a camp committed to having a positive impact on the lives of girls and young women through education in sewing, design and entrepreneurship; and Bushwick Gardens, which will supply Bushwick residents with the tools to start micro-gardens.
We are committed to building a more fair, just, and creative Brooklyn, and we thank you for your support and commitment to this endeavor.
